About Joyce

Hello there Dear Friends and Gentle Readers! I'm Joyce Ann Underwood, but you can call me "Joyce". A writer of creative non-fiction, I am originally from Crescent City, FL.  I am wife to j^C, mommy to That Sprout, Cody Cornelius, and Molly-Gator, and friend to too many lovely people to name here. My passions are: Duran Duran, writing, and rock music. I think everyone should Write Like a Rock Star.

I have been writing since I could hold a crayon. After earning a Bachelor's Degree in English and Creative Writing from the University of West Florida I spent 2 years leading creative writing workshops in Savannah, GA with the DEEP program before moving to Fayetteville, NC. My publications include Kairos, Offbeat Home, and HIV Here & Now. Most recently I was a featured reader at the Southern Writers Symposium at Methodist University. Currently, I blog at First Person Narrative and I guest blog every second and fourth Monday on SchanEllis.com.

I work with authors to help them tell their stories. Whether you need help getting the words from your brain to the page or from the page to the printer, I can help. I specialize in fine details and clients with specials needs. Growing up in Crescent City, Florida, I spent many afternoons listening to the old-timers tell the life stories of about just about everyone they had ever known. From this sprung a love for oral storytelling that would grow into a refined passion during her years studying Medieval Oral Poetry at the University of West Florida.  I want to help you tell your story. No job is too big or too small. Everybody has a story. What's yours?

Rockin' Joyce Facts
  1. My Twitter handle, UraniumJ is a combination of her initial and the Duran Duran song "Playing With Uranium" - one of my favorites because it's a great double entendre metaphor.
  2. My favorite writers are Charles Bukowski, Leonard Cohen, David Sedaris, Lou Reed, Vladimir Nabokov, Anais Nin, and Simon Lebon.
  3. My favorite book is The Wuthering Heights. Right now. It changes.
  4. I like sushi and sashimi, but I don't like cooked fish. Blackened Mahi Mahi is the exception.
  5. I could eat Indian food every day.
  6. I wish I lived in Los Angeles, but New York is my soul city.
  7. Pink and black are my favorite colors together, but green is my favorite color. Purple is my second favorite. (I like colors.)
  8. I enjoy experimental baking.
  9. I wish I had the equipment to make electronic music and sophisticated YouTube videos.
  10. I love karaoke.
  11. I have a couple of semi-famous pen-pals. Michael Gira wrote me back in 2004 and Stephen Schub used to write to me from time to time.
  12. I write emails and letters to my very dearest friends on a bi-weekly basis. I try to keep in touch with more than social media.
  13. My very favorite song is "Ordinary World" by Duran Duran. Always.
  14. I could have made this entire list about Duran Duran if I had wanted.
  15. I know a lot of things about a lot of things. As such, I'm a great conversationalist.

  1. I worry that my written letters are not legible. :( When has anyone had problems reading typed letters?

Also the postal service is not as quick or reliable as the internet.

That being said, who doesn't get a warm and fuzzy feeling when getting a handwritten letter addressed to them? The same issues listed above also make these received letters all the more valuable.

So why is their use still fading? In the 21st century, it is all about reliability, legibility, and what way is quickest so that you have more time for other things. In other words, it is a cultural change.

You, Uranium J, are an awesome literary renegade. :)
